James Messam was born and raised in Jamaica. Apart from being a Teacher, a Social Worker, a Cultural Ambassador, an Orator, and a Parish Councillor, James is above all else, a Performance Poet.

He has won Gold Medals in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commissions’ Speech and Drama Festival in 2000 and 2001 and has been a member of the Jamaica Poetry Society.

He has performed at Kwanza Celebrations, East London University, Metropolitan University and other Spoken Word Events including Speak Easy, Verbalized Minds, V.O.I.C.E. and Reparation Rallies in Brixton.

"The Essence" is James' first published collection of poems.

It is a work spanning over three decades, a historical thesis of growth and development that comes to you with a strong conviction that it will be an inspiration to all humanity.
